Famous Waterfall in Armenia Threatened

The struggle between long-term conservation versus short-term economics has been picking up in intensity, and this time it appears that one of Armenia's most famous waterfalls is about to be sacrificed according to this article.

I'm sure we can expect more battles like this around the world as energy demands continue to accelerate while the planet's natural resources continue to dwindle.

Waterfall Fatality in Mt Rainier

This bit of sad news caught my eye because Julie and I were there a little over a couple of weeks ago!

This seems to be a particularly bad year for waterfall-related fatalities around the world. Some recent fatalities over Vernal Fall and Wapama Falls (both in Yosemite) as well as near Eaton Canyon Falls in Altadena come to mind.

So we must emphasize that while the beauty of Nature is something to appreciate and seek out, you must respect its dangers by taking measures to minimize your exposure to these risks thereby maximizing your safety and enjoyment.

Here's the article I stumbled across.

Dughsagar Waterfall to be in next Bond Movie

While waterfalls in India are nothing new when it comes to Bollywood movies, shows, and music videos, it looks like they're going to feature one that we've been to for the next Bond movie (the first time in a while).

At least, that's what is reported according to this bit of news that I came across.

Major Updates to Pacific Northwest Section

Based on our recent trip to both Washington and Alaska, I've finally gotten around to completing the updates to the Pacific Northwest region. Like I said before, everything takes longer when you also have to care for a baby, including these write-ups let alone the trip itself.

Nonetheless, there have been extensive updates with new waterfalls in Washington, the addition of Alaska and its waterfalls, updates to logistics information, and even updates to some familiar waterfalls like Snoqualmie Falls as well as the Other Attractions page.

There's a lot to digest, but you can see the pages that were recently added or updated here.

I also managed to update the trip diaries (this was actually done before I went back to work, but I forgot to announce it) so if you're into reading about our experiences firsthand, you can see the latest stories here.

Finally, I also forgot about announcing updates to the California page based on an overnight backpacking trip I took the weekend before the two-week trip to the Pacific Northwest. In there was the addition of Moonlight Falls as well as the trip diary associated with it.

Coming Home from Seattle

We've just returned from a trip to Washington and Alaska with our infant. It wasn't easy, but we will definitely have new additions to the World of Waterfalls site in the coming weeks.

As usual, everything takes longer when a child is involved. And that includes updating the website after a trip!

Stay tuned...

Australian Waterfall blown upwards

I stumbled across this BBC article about a waterfall blowing upwards due to the fierce winds afflicting the area. What impressed me more was the existence of this waterfall, which Julie and I were never aware of in all the times we've been to Australia!

I suspect it's in Royal National Park though we ourselves never had a chance to visit it, especially given the drought conditions we were faced with. However, it looks like the heavy rains both this year and last have revived many waterfalls there, including this one!

Check it out!

Cedar Creek Falls Closed After Fatality

My mom and I visited Cedar Creek Falls near Ramona in the Winter a few years ago. Now, it seems like the popularity of the falls has really exploded, especially with the new trail from the Ramona Estates. However, with the increase in popularity, there have also been an increase in injuries and fatalities. This latest fatality prompted the Forest Service to close access to the falls pending an investigation.

While waterfalls are beautiful and worth the trouble to reach, you do have to respect Nature and be prepared. Cedar Falls has demonstrated what happens when you're unprepared or take unnecessary risks diving.

Video on Moonbows in Yosemite

Something we have read and heard much about but haven't done (yet) is the witnessing of a moonbow in Yosemite National Park. I just chanced on this very well done video about the topic. Indeed, it's utterly amazing how many different ways you can experience the magic of the waterfalls in Yosemite...

New Tallest Icelandic Waterfall?

Back in 2007, we surveyed as many waterfalls in Iceland as we possibly could. This included Glymur, which was the tallest waterfall at the time. Now with receding glaciers, another waterfall has been discovered that could dethrone Glymur as the country's tallest. This article explains.

Yosemite Waterfalls Updated

A slew of waterfalls that we've revisited in early June 2011 have been updated. This includes Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, Vernal and Nevada Falls, Wapama Falls, Illilouette Falls, and many others.

The updates include new movies, new photos, and updated blurbs.

Yosemite Trip Diary Posted

This is about a week overdue, but everything takes longer when you have a baby.

We attempted to see for ourselves how much the high snowpack has had an effect on the waterfalls in Yosemite Valley. Much to our chagrin, we showed up in early June and still managed to experience Spring-like conditions with cooler temperatures (15 degrees F below seasonal) and even a late Spring storm!

So we did see the waterfalls flowing on the higher side of average, but it was surprisingly less vigorous than some of our visits in June of both 2002 and 2003. I guess it wasn't warm enough to unlock all that water still trapped in the snow!

On the bright side, Julie's mom and Tahia got to experience this magical place for the firs time, and besides, the mosquitoes were practically non-existent!

Check out our trip diary!

Walkway to one of Kerikeri, New Zealand's best kept secrets

Back in 2004 when we visited the Kerikeri area in New Zealand, we visited the Rainbow Falls. Little did we know that there was another lovely waterfall just downstream of it.

This latest news that I came across indicated that they're building a new walkway to this "secret" waterfall (Wairoa Falls). So I guess the "secret" is out!

Check it out!

Daughter's First Waterfall

Last weekend, we took our daughter to Monrovia Canyon Falls. Unlike the very first waterfall we took her to (a couple of months ago) at Solstice Canyon Falls, this time she got to see the waterfall while awake! So we didn't count the Solstice Canyon Falls excursion, but in our minds, Monrovia Canyon Falls is her first. Indeed, this time it counts!

Bonita Breakthrough

After years of neglecting this waterfall, we finally got to visit Bonita Falls this weekend. And while I was pleasantly surprised by its height and seclusion (not to mention the little bit of adventure to reach it), the amount of litter and graffiti throughout the excursion and around the waterfall was a little off-putting.

Still, I was very glad that our Facebook member visitors reminded us of this falls, and now we can share our experiences with the rest of the waterfalling community...

Millard Falls and a Couple of Travel Journal Entries

I've finally managed to get some time to update the website with another way to view the closed Millard Falls as well as a couple of travel diaries of some excursions we went on the past couple of weeks.

Unfortunately, I don't consider our Idyllwild trip to Fuller Mill Creek Falls a success so I didn't post a waterfall entry for that particular one. Maybe we'll have time to go back there and finish the job as well as spend a little more time up there to finish the job on Dark Canyon Falls as well. We'll see how that plays out...

In the mean time, check out the latest we have to say...
